The World Trade Organization held a working meeting on "Plastic Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Plastic Trade Informal Dialogue" (also known as "Plastic Pollution Prevention and Control Initiative") in Geneva, Switzerland from the 17th to the 18th to discuss how to promote cooperation between the "Plastic Pollution Prevention and Control Initiative" and the "Bamboo instead of Plastic" initiative, two initiatives initiated and mainly promoted by China.
Fu Jinhe, a representative from the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization, said at the meeting that bamboo, as a green, low-carbon, fast-growing, renewable and degradable biomass material, can play a unique role in addressing a series of global challenges such as climate change, alleviating poverty and restoring degraded land.
WTO members such as the United Kingdom, Ecuador and the Philippines responded positively to the "Bamboo instead of Plastic" initiative, and expressed that they will work with China to strengthen cooperation with the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization and actively promote the formulation of international trade policies and international standards that are conducive to "Bamboo instead of Plastic" products.
Zhang Xiaohui, the Chinese delegation to the WTO, said that the "Bamboo instead of plastic" initiative and the "Plastic Pollution Prevention and Control Initiative" are highly consistent in concept, and suggested that research and discussion be conducted on bamboo and rattan as important target commodities to promote international trade in plastic substitutes.
At the meeting, representatives from multiple WTO members, relevant international organizations and think tanks also held dialogues and exchanges on how to deal with plastic pollution from a trade perspective.
China is the initiator and one of the six co-coordinators of the WTO's "Plastic Pollution Prevention and Control Initiative". Currently, 75 WTO members have participated in the initiative, covering 75% of the world's plastic trade.
The "Bamboo instead of plastic" initiative was jointly initiated by China and the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization. Its purpose is to deepen the "Bamboo instead of plastic" cooperation globally and better play the outstanding advantages and role of bamboo in replacing plastic products.
